The painting I want to tell you about is called „the Roses” and belongs to the brush of a well-known Russian artist – Peter Petrovichev. It is necessary to tell a couple of words about the painter himself. Petrovichev was a soviet painter – landscapist, who received art training in Moscow art sculpture and architecture school. Which is very important for analyzing his works.          This very painting belongs to the last period of his life and work, which was given the name of "still life,

flowers”.  His pet motif in the works is the roses in different kinds of porcelain gilded vases, mostly with a dark background.

Petrovichev’s works of art are filled with the nature’s poetic beauty and pre-Petrine architecture.  Emphatic, thick brushwork and a little bit subdued so called “twilight” colour spectrum impart severity, mystery and horror to his landscapes.

His mastery at achieving harmony of form and coulour is unique and amazing, this we can see in the picture. Looking at his pictures you don’t have to be a connoisseur of art to catch the spirit and mood they carry.  The work was panted in oil. And the emphatic precise brushstrokes cast a spell over the viewers and give the understanding of the master’s  feelings and emotions. Speaking about the colours – they were not chosen at random. Petrovichev lived in a rather difficult for our country time, several revolutions took place at that time, so we understand the choice of the colour shades. As we can see the painter uses a limited range of colours.

Though the background and the roses themselves are dark, symbolizing the jumble in the government, hard times for the country and people, living in poverty, there still Is a hope for the better future, which is reflected in the tiny light brushstrokes. The distinct accents of the chiaroscuro are placed in such a way that we can see only the roses and enjoy their simplicity and beauty. You may say that the theory about painter’s attitude to the contemporary society and his will to reform the ills of it is nonsense.  And the main motif of his works is his own life, as we know by that time he was already an old man, which is also true. But a painter transmits his feelings onto canvas.

Although the painting is rather complicated, because of the several vases, we do not have such a feeling, because we are enchanted with the beauty of the flowers.

The painting is a great example of the artist’s displaying his individuality and talent, I do not know any other painter who could depict beauty and simplicity in such a touching way and bring us under the spell of flowers.

Limited , but at the same time rich in tone, delicate sense of artistic form, emphatic, but at the same time very tiny and precise brushstrokes, flat patches of colour – these are things which make the painting be a masterpiece. Because the artist managed to combine incompatible things.

To my mind, it is not only far the best picture of the exhibition but also the best creation of this painter. It is just the way I feel about it.  But when a picture makes you feel – it becomes a masterpiece.

Welcome to our picture gallery “Karelian pallet”. It was founded in 1993. All the pictures represented in the gallery belong to the brushes of famous karelian painters. The fond of the gallery includes 65 paintings. All of them were presented to the gallery by school-leavers.

Here you can find the pictures by Tervinsky, Stronk, Timonen, Yufa, Kashtanov, Ivanenko and others.

The picture “Warm day” was painted by Vladimir Ivanenko and dates back to 1995. The picture was painted with oil. In the foreground of the picture at the hill you can see some trees which are flooded with sunlight. There are many grey stones depicted near the river in the background. In the bottom right-hand corner we can see a woman in red. There we can also see a forest. Then in the very background of the picture on the horizon there are very high mountains covered with deep forest.

This picture is made in warm tones. Mountains, forest and the sky are depicted with fresh and light colours. It radiates the warmth and luminosity. Though in this picture we can see stron colour contrasts: soft blue, yellow shadows are combined with dark, green colours.

When we look at Ivanenko’s pictures we understand that the painter managed to show the beauty of the nature. He managed to catch the spirit and the atmosphere of the nature. To my mind, he is always in accord with nature. We feel the harmony of form and colour, warmth of the nature. And there’s no doubt that aesthetic sensibility is presented in it.  Looking at this picture we feel profound and penetrating sense of beauty.

In conclusion I’d like to say that Ivanenko’s mastery at doing landscapes is unique and inimitable.

In the gallery there are 4 pictures painted by a famous artist, who is not native of Karelia. G.A. Stronk moved to Karelia in 1939.

I’d like to draw your attention to the biggest picture of the gallery – “Derzhavin on the waterfall Kivatch”. It was painted in 1999 with oil. The painter gained a great fame in Karelia thanks to this picture.

There is G.R. Derzhavin in the

foreground of the picture. He is standing on a rock. Just beyond him we can see the waterfall. There are rocks on the left. And there several bushes and trees on them. On the horizon we can see some trees. And at the top of the picture there is sky.

“Derzhavin on the waterfall Kivatch” is the most significant work. Stronk incorporated a wide range of colours into his work. Cold colours prevail in this picture. The waterfall is painted with delicate shades of the white and yellow colours. The sky is painted in blue. Derzhavin, rocks, trees, and bushes are painted in warm colours. Red colour of Derzhavin’s clothes keys up the picture’s colour and emphasizes the overall colour structure of the picture. Green, grey, brown colours key up the picture’s brightness and warmth.

The painter gave more importance to the waterfall. Soft blue, yellow, and white shadows of the waterfall are vibrant and translucent.  Though there are no bright fainty colours, we can see a varied play of light and colour. There are strong colour contrasts between the rock, which is painted in cold colours, and also between Derzhavin and the waterfall. We can see a harmony of form and colour of every object depicted in the picture.

In my opinion “Derzhavin on the waterfall Kivatch” Is far the best picture in the gallery. It is the most significant work and I’m under the spell of this impressive picture. We can see a precision of details and a subtle colouring. The picture appeals to my heart and mind. It seems very attractive and inimitable for me. Stronk has a profound and penetrating sense of beauty. He managed to convey the idea of man’s belonging to nature. He caught the spirit and the mood of the waterfall and he depicted it very vividly.

The picture “Still-life with Pomegranates” belongs to the brush of M.S. Yufa. He is famous for his landscapes, portraits and still-life.

I want you to look at this picture. This still-life is called “Still-life with Pomegranates”. The picture is depicted with oil sketches. There are strong contrasts in this picture: the pomegranates are so bright and the background is so dark. But all the colours are cold. The pomegranates are depicted in the foreground. There are 3 of them.  Just beyond the second pomegranate there is a vase with two beautiful flowers. The vase is crystal and through the glass we can see the water. The petals of the flowers are white and the middles are yellow.

The painter gives us emotions through an extraordinary feeling of beauty, through a manner of execution of a picture. Oil brushstrokes give us a sense of movement, volume, reality of subjects in the picture. This reception bewitches and arises a warm response in us. I consider this picture is filled with suffering. Two flowers are not bright and the background is depicted with cold colours.

The pomegranates allocate as bright stains. They draw a sight. And a person who looks at this picture remains interested in it.
